Air Travel Restarts at Scotland's Busiest Airport After Substantial Air Traffic Control Outage

A technical fault at Edinburgh's ATC meant all flights could enter or leave the facility.

Flight operations have recommenced at Edinburgh Airport after a significant technical issue at the control tower grounded all flights.

All incoming and outgoing flights were stopped because of an systems problem that arose around 08:30.

Several flyers reported being stuck in aircraft on the tarmac as the outage continued.

Services Recommence with Residual Impact

The airport confirmed at 10:40 that flights had resumed, and expressed gratitude to passengers for their "understanding and cooperation".

However, considerable delays are expected to continue throughout the day. Flights to London Gatwick, Bristol, Amsterdam and Frankfurt have been cancelled, with a host of additional flights facing hold-ups.

A spokesperson had initially projected that a significant number of movements could be affected.

"Passengers are advised to get in touch with their carrier for the most up-to-date details on their specific flights," the statement added.

Root of the Disruption

Officials linked the widespread suspension to an technical fault with its air traffic control provider.

Passengers continue to be advised to check the status of their trip before departing to the airport as knock-on effects are worked through.
