Chelsea Manager Maresca Dismisses Manchester City Links as Pure Gossip
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca has labelled fresh reports connecting him with a move to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, addressed the ongoing rumours about his future.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea manager in the summer of 2024, is under contract running through the end of the decade, with a possible extra year option.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is little room for these kind of things."
He further elaborated, Primarily, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my focus, I have stated many times, is solely on this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was linked with Juventus in Italy. So I don't pay attention because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, presently placed in fourth position in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a 12:30 GMT kick-off.
Tensions Following Recent Remarks
Maresca's latest comments come after he referred to a recent 48-hour period as his "worst" since arriving at Chelsea.
Those initial remarks had fueled considerable talk of a possible rift between the coach and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When asked if he had discussed matters with the Chelsea's leadership, Maresca responded, "We are in the same building, so we talk about various topics. But about the post-Everton media session, no."
The Italian did confirm he would "absolutely" remain at the club next season and urged the fans to keep backing the team".
In brighter news, Maresca indicated that sidelined attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back ahead of schedule, potentially available for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: Unresolved Tension
The perceived disconnect between Maresca and the club's hierarchy remains as an open wound that still cause concern.
While there has been no further escalation of the situation publicly, there has equally been no apology forthcoming, creating the matter unresolved.
The atmosphere during these media briefings has become notably strained, leading to fears it could undermine what has otherwise been a decent beginning to the campaign.
Chelsea's on-field situation is strong: they are fourth in the league, have reached the League Cup semi-finals, and can secure a better Champions League draw with good results in their remaining matches.
The lingering question is whether this behind-the-scenes dynamic might eventually affect a team that was just starting to look settled.
