Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture toward Spectators
The National Football League has levied a hefty $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.
“That was unfortunate. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was completely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Recent examples include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, possesses an approximate net worth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.
Recent Controversies and Public Spotlight
The incident follows a controversial preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded key pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
Moreover, Jones was a prominent subject in a Netflix documentary that explored his role in building the Cowboys into the globe’s highest-worth athletic organization, despite its recent title shortcomings.
The NFL’s decision to fine Jones highlights its continuing initiative to maintain proper behavior among all team officials, irrespective of their position or financial standing.
