Ex-President Donald Trump has voiced reluctance about sending federal dollars to the city he grew up in of America's biggest metropolis should left-wing top contender Mamdani be elected Tuesday's mayoral election.
"It will be difficult for me as the nation's leader to give a lot of money to New York, because with a socialist running the city, what happens is squandering the funds allocated there," Trump commented during a TV appearance.
The Trump White House has made multiple efforts to slash government funding and funding for initiatives primarily located in Democratic-led areas.
Recent polling indicate the progressive candidate is ahead of his chief competitor, former NY Governor Cuomo, on the eve of the mayoral contest.
Trump provided no specifics on his remark about funding should the candidate win. NYC obtained $7.4 billion dollars (5.7 billion GBP) in government money in the present budget cycle.
In a comprehensive interview, Trump remarked that a Mamdani as mayor would make left-wing ex- New York City Mayor de Blasio "look great".
"I witnessed de Blasio, how ineffective a city leader he was, and this man will do a worse job than the former mayor significantly," the former leader stated about the candidate.
The former president, who grew up in the urban area of Queens, also effectively endorsed Cuomo, a Democratic candidate, during the exchange.
"I am not a supporter of Cuomo particularly, but if it's gonna be between a imperfect Democrat and a socialist, I would choose the flawed candidate all the time, in all honesty," the former leader stated.Mamdani's Political Stance
The candidate, who would lead a international banking capital, is a avowed progressive socialist, though he has disputed allegations he is a Marxist, joking in one television interview that he was "comparable to a Scandinavian politician, only darker-skinned".
Primary Results
Mamdani secured victory in the Democratic primary, while the former governor placed as runner-up. The 34-year-old state assemblyman has described the ex- New York governor a puppet and parrot of the former president.
"The solution to a Trump presidency is not focused on forming an identical version at the local level," the candidate stated on the previous day.Campaign Arguments
Cuomo has sought to parry that line of attack by portraying himself as the sole contender adequately prepared to handle the former president's government.
He was NY's governor during the global health emergency when numerous states confronted the White House, though Cuomo himself was examined after government probes discovered senior care casualties were significantly understated during the crisis.
"I battled Donald Trump," Cuomo said during a campaign forum. "While I'm battling for New York, I will not discontinue the struggle."Federal Actions
Trump has deployed military personnel to liberal urban centers as part of a law enforcement initiative, while working to withdraw financial support from municipalities that restrict their co-operation with national immigration officials.
