The United States Department of Agriculture declared recently that SNAP funds from a major federal support systems won't be issued next month because of the continuing federal government shutdown.
The government shutdown lasted three and a half weeks as officials revealed the news, in response to appeals by more than two hundred Democratic representatives pushing the department to tap into contingency funds to pay for the upcoming nutrition payments.
“Ultimately, resources are exhausted,” the department confirmed. “Now, no payments will be distributed” beginning in November.
More than 41 million individuals rely on the regular assistance, according to federal data. Various areas, such as one southwestern state, dependence on the program is as high as a significant portion of citizens.
A memo obtained by journalists revealed that USDA officials would not access emergency reserves to cover next month's assistance.
Republicans and Democrats are still at odds regarding how to finance and restart federal agencies.
Remarks from the head of a budget research center noted that federal leadership had opportunities to take earlier action to avoid interruption in payments.
“It could have, and should have taken steps before now to be prepared to access these resources,” the statement continued. “Conversely, they might decide against it for potential political benefit” as conservative leaders work to pressure Senate Democrats to vote for a funding package that would resume federal functions.
Governors in multiple regions declared states of emergency in recent days to free up resources to address food insecurity expecting SNAP benefits not being issued next month.
