In a defensive struggle on Sunday, the Denver Broncos managed to secure a close victory over the struggling New York Jets. Signal-caller Bo Nix connected on a first-quarter scoring strike and specialist Wil Lutz kicked the late decisive three-pointer to secure the hard-fought win.
Despite registering nine sacks against Jets quarterback Justin Fields, the Broncos were behind 11-10 after conceding a safety in the third quarter. Interestingly, the Jets could only produce just 82 total net yards during the entire game.
Nix, who completed 19 of 30 passes for 174 yards, led a decisive 12-play, 65-yard possession that ended with Lutz's short field goal with approximately five minutes remaining.
In spite of their horrendous offensive display, the Jets still had possession with a chance to drive for a possible victory. However Fields was sacked on fourth-and-eight from the Denver 44 after coach Aaron Glenn chose to attempt the conversion rather than sending out kicker Nick Folk for a difficult field-goal attempt.
Fields had difficulties all game, connecting on just 9 of 17 passes for 45 yards. The Jets ended up with minus-10 net yards passing, the fewest in any game since 1998.
"Our passing game was non-existent," Glenn commented following the contest.
The running back surpassed 200 yards from scrimmage for the second straight week and rookie Ryan Fitzgerald made a 33-yard field goal as time expired to give the Carolina Panthers a narrow victory over the Dallas Cowboys.
The Los Angeles Rams finished the first half with a goal-line stand and subsequently signal-caller Matthew Stafford led them to two touchdowns to begin the second half in their 17-3 win over the Baltimore Ravens.
