Similar to Storm Claudia tore through the northern region the night before, Manchester City blew Manchester United aside at the Etihad. It was a statement three-nil triumph for the City coach's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that firmly established their leadership claims as they consolidated their standing at the WSL pinnacle.
This scoreline marked successive WSL losses for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since May 2024, placing them seven points off the table toppers with their title hopes severely dented.
The Red Devils' ability to manage domestic and European football with a thin roster has been a frequently analyzed topic since they earned a place in the European competition. Considering the fixture list, it always felt like this was the period that would truly test this ability. Sadly for the away side, they appeared weary all game, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.
The United manager had attempted to freshen things up with a a few changes. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all provided energy, although the omission of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the substitutes caused surprise.
Manchester City, in comparison, have no similar workload issues. The City coach made one adjustment from last week’s win over Everton with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since healing from injury.
The pressure started to build for Skinner and his squad from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the strength from City whose dynamic offense controlled and dismantled the opposition with a superb initial 45 minutes display that saw them net a trio in under half an hour.
This put the hosts firmly in control and left United disorganized. Prior to this fixture, the away side had conceded just a handful in this WSL season but they disintegrated in the wake of Manchester City's creative prowess.
The omens came soon when Vivianne Miedema used her power to muscle Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot off target. Lauren Hemp was at the core of everything early on, using the room left by Jayde Riviere down United’s wing. Her deliveries were posing a threat and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg kicked off the line.
The Red Devils had multiple forays forwards, their long-ball tactic giving them options in the wings but they could not trouble Yamashita. Manchester City, meanwhile, commanded the ball, taunting their rivals and trying to pull them out of their organization.
They converted their dominance with almost half an hour played when Fujino won the hosts a corner. A cross to the back post was directed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to score. It was City’s seventh headed goal of the term.
They increased their cushion with an additional two goals just before the interval. When Rose was permitted to drive through the midfield from central defence, the play widened for the hosts. The key Kerstin Casparij picked the ball up on the right side before providing a accurate low cross for Bunny Shaw to force home. Shortly later, they had a third after a rapid change in possession saw Lauren Hemp allowed the opportunity to strike a attempt home from distance.
The most obvious change came from the United manager at the break as Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was futile to alter the outcome of the contest. Ex- City player Jess Park came most likely to score, hitting the upright, but the away team were creatively abject and failed to register a solitary shot on target.
The hosts, on the other hand, could have extended their lead when a superb Miedema pass sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it was insignificant to the winning team. Having failed to overcome any side who placed above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have wins against Arsenal and United to position them in a strong standing after nine games.
