Following a pivotal victory at the Lusail Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has substantially reduced the margin in the title race. He now finds himself just twelve points behind leader Lando Norris and in front of teammate Oscar Piastri, the stage is set for a nail-biting three-way championship battle at the famous Yas Marina Circuit.
Verstappen's Qatar win was anything but predictable. While he delivered a flawless drive for his team, the victory was significantly impacted by a questionable strategic decision from the McLaren team. Opting not to pit during an early safety car period, McLaren presented the advantage to their rival, who capitalized impeccably.
"I'm excited, I'm eager to go there and have a go at it," the driver said. "I approach it with just good vibes. I will give everything I can but at the same time, should I fall short, I still know that I had an amazing season."
This outlook according to him alleviates the weight of expectation. The aim for the final round is simple: to get the most from every single element from himself and the car.
The incredible part of this late-season charge truly astonishing is the margin he has recovered. Following the Dutch Grand Prix in August, he was a massive 104 points behind the then-leader his rival and had publicly written off his title chances.
The turnaround began with major technical upgrades introduced by Red Bull at the Italian Grand Prix. Changes to the vehicle's underbody and aerodynamic package solved persistent balance issues, allowing the driver to regain confidence with the chassis once more.
From then on, his form has been nothing short of formidable, securing five victories and several top-three finishes. He made sure to highlight the unified work behind this comeback.
"We have triumphed where maybe we shouldn't have, by executing the optimal strategy as a unit," Verstappen added. "The way I work with my team on the pit wall and the every member... we are deeply connected."
Ahead of the travel to Abu Dhabi, the points situation is utterly compelling.
The intensity now shifts on the papaya-colored cars, who have seen a sizable lead disappear due to recent setbacks, including a twin DSQ in Las Vegas. For Verstappen, the situation allows for freedom, turning the ultimate Grand Prix into a simple opportunity to attack with everything to gain.
