According to the UNHCR, over 60,000 civilians have fled the Sudanese city of el-Fasher, which was seized by the militia RSF during the weekend.
Accounts suggest mass executions and crimes against humanity as paramilitary forces took control of the city after an 18-month siege characterized by food shortages and intense shelling.
The exodus of those fleeing the violence towards the town of Tawila, approximately 80km (50 miles) west of el-Fasher, had accelerated in the past few days, as stated by United Nations refugee agency representative.
Refugees were telling horrendous stories of abuses, including sexual violence, and the agency was finding it difficult to secure enough accommodation and nourishment for them.
All children was experiencing undernourishment, she noted.
Estimates suggest that more than 150,000 residents are presently trapped in el-Fasher, which had been the military's remaining bastion in the western region of Darfur.
The Rapid Support Forces has denied widespread accusations that the killings in el-Fasher are driven by ethnicity and follow a practice of the Arab paramilitaries focusing on non-Arab communities.
Nevertheless the paramilitary group has detained one of its members, Abu Lulu, who has been charged with summary executions.
The organization distributed recordings showing the militiaman's arrest after identification that he was responsible for the execution of several non-combatants in the vicinity of el-Fasher.
Digital platform has confirmed that it has suspended the account connected to Lulu. Uncertainty exists whether he had managed the profile in his identity.
Sudan was thrown into a internal conflict in April 2023 when a brutal power struggle broke out between its military and the RSF.
The conflict has caused a food crisis and allegations of ethnic cleansing in the western Darfur region.
In excess of 150,000 individuals have lost their lives in the fighting throughout the country, and about 12 million have fled their dwellings in what the United Nations has described as the most extensive humanitarian crisis.
The takeover of el-Fasher reinforces the regional separation in the country, with the RSF now in command of Sudan's west and significant areas of adjacent Kordofan to the southern area, and the military holding the main city, Khartoum, central and eastern regions along the coastal region.
The two warring rivals had been partners - coming to power together in a takeover in 2021 - but disagreed over an foreign-endorsed initiative to transition to democratic governance.
