Pre-release events for the next MTG set, Lorwyn Eclipsed, will commence on January 16. While the complete preview period is slated to begin on January 5, lead designer Maro Rosewater has again disclosed a long list of gameplay hints ahead of time.
Within the many hints, a few are particularly notable. The set will feature a "card that tutors each turn." This effect probably refers to a creature that allows a player to search their library every turn for a certain card, possibly with certain restrictions.
This might be something as simple as finding a land card every turn, or something more dynamic such as a search effect that scales depending on a creature's power.
He also teased a new piece that duplicates abilities that trigger. This could be linked to a revealed character, a creature that, for the cost of a pair of ready creatures, can replicate a triggered ability one time per turn.
A further standout reveal concerns rules text that will "counter every spells your opponents have on the stack." Although its phrasing is slightly ambiguous, it implies an incredibly powerful ability capable of handling numerous castings simultaneously.
This expansion will further include cards that reference "the gap between its strength and toughness." With creatures with stat lines like 1/3 or 3/1, this concept could become highly meaningful.
A significant lore teaser is a creature with the type line: "Legendary Creature – Elf Faerie Noble." Given the established tension between the Elf race and the Faerie race on this world, this hybrid identity hints at a significant narrative development.
The lead designer also stated the core eight creature types featured in the set: Elemental, Elf, Faerie, Giant, Goblin, Kithkin, Merfolk, and Treefolk. This reiterates a heavy tribal focus for the set.
Toward the end in the rundown, Rosewater mentions "Bark of Doran," probably a reference to the famous Treefolk, hinting at a renewed emphasis on the relationship of power and defense.
Beyond these headline teasers, the expansion will feature:
Lastly, Rosewater teased a few titles, including Mirrorform, Moonshadow, Gilt-Leaf’s Embrace, and Chaos Spewer. These provide preliminary clues into the expansion's narrative directions and are references to established concepts from the world's past.
In summary, Lorwyn Eclipsed is not only a homecoming to a fan-favorite plane but also a challenge to see if modern Magic: The Gathering can embrace the distinctive complexities that made the first Lorwyn block so memorable.
