Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Comments

New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, responding to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

The quarterback's response pointed to the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.

During that period, the NFL determined that the Saints had incentivized team members for delivering hard hits on opponents. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.

The Cause of the Recent Dispute

Wilson's response came after Payton delivered comments after the Broncos' historic comeback victory over the New York. Payton remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.

Additionally, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.

Background of the Wilson-Payton Relationship

  • The quarterback joined the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245M contract.
  • The team finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season before Denver hired Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a period in broadcasting.
  • The coach benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson remained on the roster by March 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly breakup between the quarterback and his coach.
