The English Primary Batsmen Miss Day-Night Tour Match

The English primary batsmen decided to skip a pink-ball practice game in the capital, even after a heavy defeat in the first Ashes Test in Western Australia.

England suffered defeat within two days in Perth, creating an 11-day break ahead of the second pink-ball Test in Brisbane.

The break opened up the option for players to join the England Lions two-day pink-ball match against a invitational side in Canberra on Saturday and Sunday.

Instead, just fast bowlers one bowler and another bowler, plus batter Jacob Bethell – none of whom played in the first Test – are set to go to join the development squad.

Reports indicate that not one of the Perth players requested to participate in the Canberra fixture.

Ex- English Player Describes Decision "Strange"

Upon learning the team were considering sending players to Canberra for the development squad match, we assumed it would be those requiring match time.

Ex- England fast bowler and lead analyst added:

The team are responsible for their preparation and their performances during matches. It's their job to doing everything possible of winning the series. The real test will be with the results.

Missed Opportunity for Pink-Ball Experience

This match against the invitational side is a tradition for touring sides down under.

The tourists have played in the fixture in previous Ashes tours, but it was not from their plans on this occasion because of a potential short gap to the next Test had the Perth Test gone all five days.

The flight from Western Australia to the capital takes almost 240 minutes, with a further 120-minute journey from Canberra and Queensland.

However, given the first Test was completed so quickly – marking the first 48-hour Ashes Test since 1921 – the idea of dispatching some of the batters to Canberra appeared to make sense.

Batting Issues in First Test

  • The tourists were bowled out twice in Perth in under 68 overs.
  • Not since 1904 has the team faced such a low number of balls in a defeat in a Test.
  • Both captain Ben Stokes and former captain Joe Root failed to reach 10 runs in both innings.
  • Zak Crawley was only the fourth England opening batsman to record a pair in an Ashes Test.

The side had just a single warm-up match before the first Test, meaning the fixture in Canberra could have offered valuable time in the middle.

Uncommon Pink-Ball Test Coming Up

Furthermore, the development game provided experience with the day-night ball, with the team set to face a unusual day-night Test.

The tourists been defeated in 5 of their seven prior pink-ball Tests, whereas Australia triumphed in thirteen from 14.

With Mitchell Starc, who claimed 10 wickets in Perth, Australia boast the best day-night specialist in the world.

Of England's probable XI in the next Test, gloveman one player and pace bowler Gus Atkinson have never played a red-ball game using a day-night ball, while a third has played only one.

Team Management Position

Asked following the Perth match whether England would alter their plans and send players to the capital, the skipper remained firm they would not.

I've been asked repeatedly, that was the method in the past. Our preparations thoroughly and work intensely whenever possible to improve our game.

Head coach the coach appeared to leave the door open when he said:

We've just got to determine what the pros and cons are. We're not married to any position currently, but we'll work it out soon.

The coach added that he was "sure" a batsman could play in Canberra if he wanted to.

Concerns from Former Captain

Speaking recently, ex-skipper a well-known figure said it would be "amateurish" to decline the chance to play in Canberra.

What harm is it playing 48 hours of cricket using the pink ball under lights?

He continued:

It's hard to believe so traditional to suggest that by getting match practice they might get a little bit better?

My method is, you've got a day-night two-day game, you go and grab it, make the most of it, play those two days and provide yourself the best chance.

England are scheduled to fly to Brisbane midweek and do not plan to practice until Monday. There is the possibility of an extra practice at the weekend.
