The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It features the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that an element was missing in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have some surprises and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
