The UK authorities has placed 11 more nations to its travel warning register about the risks of industrial alcohol poisoning from adulterated alcoholic drinks.

This expanded advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "an international surge in the incidence of reported cases" of methanol contamination.

Only last month, officials had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, after a number of high-profile events including the fatal demise of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that as little as tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or death within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?

Methanol is a toxic chemical often utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. It is not meant for human consumption.

Although it is generated during the production of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the refining procedure.

However in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and since it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to notice.

Government Advice for Travellers

Foreign Office minister a senior official said that all travellers should know the symptoms of industrial alcohol contamination.

"If you're having drinks overseas, stick to well-known venues and steer clear of local brews or complimentary drinks," the official said.

"Should anything feels off, such as a hangover that's way worse than usual or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention fast."

The complete list of destinations identified as posing a risk of methanol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
