Why PSG Are Focusing On Local Players to Protect Their Continental Title

Locally developed players were previously a fairly infrequent sight on Paris St-Germain starting lineups.

Until a few years ago, the club's QSI era was spearheaded by big-money acquisitions from abroad.

The Shift in Philosophy

Some of PSG's most notable youth graduates during those years, including Kingsley Coman and Mike Maignan, left Paris before making their mark in the first team.

The club's turn towards French talent in current campaigns has already seen the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue lead last year's historic campaign.

The Academy Revolution

Now, PSG are looking to build further and develop around their local prospects, a change that has been accelerated by an recent injury crisis.

Due to Dembele, Doue and Achraf Hakimi among the long-term absentees, there have been as many as five homegrown players - each hailing from the Paris area - in the team sheet this season.

State-of-the-Art Training Facilities

The team's comprehensive youth development center has been key to that strategy.

Two years ago, PSG moved out of the previous facilities to the nearby modern PSG Campus.

The recently opened complex, which were publicly launched a last year, accommodate the professional teams along with their academy teams over a large area.

These include numerous football grounds, housing for 140 young players, learning centers and even a organic garden.

Future Direction

During an event to mark the half-century milestone of the academy's opening, sporting advisor Luis Campos stated that the club's long-term plans were to integrate "increasing numbers of players from the Paris area" in the senior squad.

"The philosophy is to have prospects in all youth categories who can progress through the system," explains Campos.

A clearer path from the academy to the senior squad can also lessen the organization's need on the player acquisitions, the Portuguese executive pointed out.

For Campos, "constant purchasing often doesn't make you a superior chef."

"What's important is to be progressing in the correct path, not to stockpile players," he continues.

Academy Integration

The former Monaco director also described a meeting between Luis Enrique and the academy staff, in which the Spaniard outlined his "principles of play" rather than dictating particular drills or playing systems to follow.

The manager's arrival in recent years, Campos explains, was particularly supported by "willingness to play young talents as soon as they mature."

Emerging Talents

Facing Barcelona in October, it was Senny Mayulu, who led the line and scored in PSG's impressive 2-1 victory.

Warren Zaire-Emery, Quentin Ndjantou and Ibrahim Mbaye were also participated in the success over the Catalans, while teenage Mathis Jangeal was on the bench, having made his senior debut a recently.

Mayulu, who registered the fifth and final goal in the continental decider victory over Inter in May, has been one of the initial triumphs of the revised strategy.

Multi-position Player

The young midfielder, primarily a midfield player, particularly attributes his half-century of senior appearances to his versatility.

Since securing a place in each Ligue 1 fixture since the early season, Mayulu has been utilized across the pitch, from full-back position, to middle of the park, to attacking role.

Academy Leadership

Yohan Cabaye has been the head of the club's academy since 2024, having originally joined the development system soon after the completion of his football journey.

The experienced professional speaks particularly highly of Mayulu, highlighting the way he recovered from injury various instances in his youth career.

"When he initially joined the academy, he was struggling to complete full seasons," Cabaye says. "He demonstrated such resilience that he consistently returned, though."

Special Prospect

Zaire-Emery, as the experienced midfielder describes him, is an exception.

"We can't use him as an example, or else you'd have 20 16-year-olds approaching Luis Enrique's attention," he comments.

Presently experiencing his fourth campaign in the first team, the 19-year-old talent has been leading the depleted Parisians from an progressively established right-back role.

Improved Display

After struggling through stretches of last season, the Les Bleus representative is rediscovering the dynamic performance that first saw him break into the professional setup.

After also coming back to the Les Bleus squad earlier this month, the local product explained his period with the under-21 national team contributed to restoring his self-belief.

"I've focused on myself, I persisted and worked hard," he explained before the fixture versus Bayer Leverkusen.

PSG have reaped the rewards, with Zaire-Emery acting as the standard-bearer once again for the new homegrown crop of Parisians.

External Attention

A key part of optimizing the capital city prospects is combating approaches by rival teams.

Utilizing dedicated recruitment staff observing junior competitions in the metropolitan area, PSG are looking to improve their influence on the rich source of prospects at their immediate vicinity, from which their Ligue 1 and Champions League opponents have historically signed players.

Academy Achievements

When development league outcomes are anything to go by, PSG will possess numerous players to integrate in the coming campaigns.

The under-19 side won the competition again this recent campaign and have excelled during the international tournaments, which has naturally drawn external interest.

"We often have between multiple observers from France and abroad attending our youth games," Cabaye notes.</
