Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge specific calls made by the official, following the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
